CORRELATION ANALYSIS
Correlation Analysis between the SLP and the Air Temperature near the surface during the Typhoon BAVI
Correlation analysis is a statistical analysis method that analyzes the close degree of correlation between variables.
Correlation coefficients indicate how closely the two probability variables correlate. The coefficient of correlation, r, always satisfies below conditions.
-
-1≤r≤1
-
r>0 with positive correlation and r<0 with negative correlation.
-
If there is no correlation, r=0. (See below expression.)
Since surface level pressure (SLP) is used as a measure to determine the influence of typhoon BAVI in the coding process, we run a correlation analysis between SLP and air temperature at low altitude to determine the relationship between the air temperature near the surface and the influence of typhoon BAVI.
If temperature affects the development of typhoons, similarly to the expert analysis, the higher the air temperature during the typhoon, the lower the SLP. In other words, there will be a negative correlation between air temperature and SLP values overall.
